kollam house boat trip

If travel in India is an all-you-can-eat feast of rich and fiery curries -- an occasionally overwhelming assault on your senses -- a houseboat trip in Kerala's idyllic Backwaters is the raita, a side dish of yogurt and mint to cool and cleanse your palate.

A fleet of traditional boats called kettuvallams, once used to transport rice and spices to market, have been transformed into spacious and surprisingly well-appointed houseboats. Viewing the simple thatched exteriors, you'd have no idea they are actually floating hotels with air-conditioned bedrooms and full baths; some even have flat-panel televisions.
